ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nerve growth factor (NGF) and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) can promote the repair of peripheral nerve. However, increasing the expression of NGF and MAG in the injured peripheral nerve by transgene technology has not been reported.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of NGF and MAG after adenovirus (Ad) mediated transfection in the injured sciatic nerve in rats.METHODS: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal, model, Ad, NGF and NGF-MAG groups. Sciatic nerve injury models were established in the latter four groups by cutting and suturing the right sciatic nerve. Afterwards, the rats in each group were subject to the intramuscular injection of normal saline, normal saline, Ad (1×108 PFU), Ad-NGF (1×108 PFU), and Ad-NGF-MAG (1×108 PFU), respectively, once every 2 days, for consecutive three times.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The expression level of NGF in the rat sciatic nerve in the Ad and normal groups was significantly higher than that in the NGF and NGF-MAG groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the Ad, NGF and normal groups, the expression level of MAG in the NGF-MAG group was significantly increased (P < 0.05). To conclude, the Ad-mediated NGF and MAG after double gene transfection were expressed effectively in the injured sciatic nerve in rats.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the application of quantitative temperature testing (QTT) in forensic identification and clinical diagnosis of neurogenic erectile dysfunction (NED).@*METHODS@#TSA-II-NeuroSensory Analyzer was used to measure the thresholds of four kinds of sensory, including cold, cold pain, heat, heat pain, in 22 normal and 35 NED patients at dorsal glans (DG), left thigh interior (LTI) and left thenar (LT). To calculate the relative thresholds of the sensory mentioned above between DG and LTI (DG/LTI), and between DG and LT (DG/LT). Then to analyze those thresholds and the relative thresholds.@*RESULTS@#NED group showed significant higher threshold than the normal group in DG-heat, DG-heat pain, LTI-heat, LTI-heat pain, DG/LTI-heat, DG/LT-heat, DG/LT-heat pain (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The threshold of QTT at dorsal glans could be used as an accessory indicator in forensic medicine and clinical diagnosis of NED.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of synthetic intervention on community re-entry of outpatients with schizophrenia. Methods Two hundred and eighty-four patients were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 143 ) and the control group (n = 141 ). The participants in the intervention group received mental health education, medication consultation, skill training and family-based psychological intervention for 1 year. The control group was followed up through clinic visits. At baseline, half a year and the end of the year, all the subjects completed the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Results The scores of SSRS and PANSS at baseline were not significantly different between the two groups. At the end of the year, the score of SSRS (32. 85 ± 12. 18) ,the objective support subscale (9. 15± 4. 18 ) ,the subjective support subscale ( 16. 92±7. 34) and the support utility subscale (6. 77±2. 09 ) in the intervention group were significantly increased when compared with the control group ( 31.05±8. 35,7. 77±4. 36,13.46±7.87,6. 23±2. 12, all P < 0.05 ). The score of PANSS (38. 88 ±9. 58 ), the positive subseale (7.40 ±1.12 ), the negative subscale ( 11. 32±5.92 ) and the general psychopathology subscale (20. 16±5. 19 ) in the intervention group showed significant difference with the control group (46. 88 ±16. 37,8.60 ±3. 19,13.52±7. 81,24. 76±8. 08 ,all P <0. 01 ). At the end of the year, the relapse of psychotic symptoms in the intervention and the control group was 18. 18% and 34. 75% ,respectively ( χ2 = 10. 03, P < 0. 01 ). Conclusion The study results suggest that synthetic intervention could be effective for schizophrenic outpatients in community re-entry.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo find out association mapping of loci related to schizophrenia on chromosome 1 with microsatellite markers in DNA pooling samples from schizophrenic cases and normal controls in Shandong peninsula.

METHODSA total of 31 microsatellite markers on chromosome 1 spaced at approximately 10 cM were scanned to two separated DNA pooling samples consisting of 119 schizophrenic cases and 119 normal controls respectively. Statistic analysis was performed by Chi-square test method to compare the difference between the ratio of each allele between the two pooling samples.

RESULTSSignificant statistic difference was found at D1S2878 between cases and controls, and P< 0.01 at this loci.

CONCLUSIOND1S2878 locus on chromosome 1 associates with schizophrenia in Shandong peninsula. Fine mapping and searching for candidate genes are warranted in this region.
